It will only "totally explode" it into individual surface pieces if you've only got one single object selected when you run it - if you've got more than one object selected those objects stay whole and each whole object moves from the common center point instead.
If you've got a multi-style object you could separate things into style chunks (right click on each style and use Edit > Separate) to break them into their own objects, then when doing explodemove with all those objects selected that should work.
