There is a Rebuild command that can help with that:

If you set it in "# of points" mode and turn off "Keep corners" will sample points along the curve and build a new smooth curve through those sampled points.

Sometimes it can be good to just redraw a messy curve though just by snapping points onto the old one using the regular curve draw commands.
