Hi Paul, it looks like you've got this all figured out, that was definitely a polygon mesh object in your cylinder 3DM file.

The library that I use for importing various CAD formats like STEP, IGES, and SAT does not support ASM format without also additionally licensing this other library called Datakit, which is quite expensive. I think that's why that one plugin that you saw is so expensive, because it's based off of Datakit.

So I guess that could be possible but it would probably mean some major price increase for MoI in order to use that library.
