right side or top side when drawing?

Hi Tony, usually the Top view means the top as it sits in the machine.

Like if you were sitting at a work bench, the top view would be a view looking straight down on to the tabletop surface of your work bench.

So it sounds like you may want to draw your particular project in a side view instead.

But if you draw it in the wrong view it is not a big deal, you can just rotate it 90 degrees to reorient it. The easiest way to do that is to just select everything and then grab the rotation grip on the edit frame that is on the outside of selected objects:
