SubD Ex;port

Michael,

Since you did such a great job on OBJ export. I was wondering, if it would be possible to write an OBJ export that generates Catmull-Clark Subdivision surfaces?

I would imagine that the same surface approximation calculations that go into Nurbs could be applied to generating Subd surfaces that honor the Catmull-Clark algorithm.

It'd be a great advance in 3D surface creation. On the modeling side you get all the speed and freedom benefits of Nurbs, then on export, you wouldnt have such heavy weight meshes. For instance, you might need 8 or 9 rows of polygons to approximate a fillet, where as in Subd, it may only require 1 or 2 (if you factor in edge weighting).

Some people say that Subd is the new Nurbs. But, I think that using the two methodologies together would make a great design tool.

What do you think?

And is it even possible?
