Behaviour of rotating and shifting (paning) the view

Coming from Blender and Cinema 4D I am used to rotate and shift the view using some shortcuts like ALT-LMB (Alt-LeftMouseButton). I am glad these type of shortcuts also work in MoI. But sometimes I also use the icons on the bottom of each screen. However, the rotating and shifting mechanism seems to work differently if I use these screen-icons. While with the shortcuts the imaginary viewing plane seems to be hard-connected to my mouse, the imaginary viewing plane has some "intertia" (it seems to continue its movement even after the mouse stopped) when I use the screen-icons.

Is this behaviour on purpose, is it maybe the difference between having a pen tablet or having a mouse?

Yours sincerely,
