Hi Ed,
I projected the text to a surface. Extruded it to the thickness I wanted. You can then use that original surface and "trim it" with the projected text. Keep all the capping part. Then I copied and moved my caps to the other side of the extrusion and joined into a solid.

Let me know if thats not clear and I'll re-create the file with the steps in it to see.
