Hi Burr, yup this is going to be a pretty big feature area for version 2.0 - I want to add an object organization type panel which should let you do grouping and browse through objects by name as well.

I haven't quite started on this area yet, but it will happen pretty soon, you should see more discussion on this in the next few weeks or so.

In the meantime, for selection you may be interested in some of the scripts on Petr's page here: http://kyticka.webzdarma.cz/3d/moi/ . There are some selection scripts there so you could set up a keyboard shortcut to select all curve objects for example, that may help.
