Hi Nick - there is a way to see and set the view angles by going to Options / View / 3D view angles.

Those angles are also available to scripting, so it would be possible to cook up something that could save and restore the view direction, but it won't quite get you all the way there because there isn't any way for a script to get at the view position right now in addition to direction.

I've added this to the wishlist.
