Hi Charles, no it is not currently possible to do this.

You can however hide objects, or even individual surfaces of objects that are getting in your way.

Also the hidden edges of objects are available to be seen in the faint dashed line style, and can be selected. My hope is that this mechanism should give you most of the functionality of wireframe mode. But if you have objects that are completely contained within other ones, you may need to hide the outer one to work on the inner one.
