There are some alternate ways to zoom with the pointer + a modifier key which work relative to the pointer location like that.

Try one of these methods:

Alt + Ctrl + Left drag up and down = Zoom
Ctrl + Right drag up and down = Zoom
Alt + Right drag up and down = Zoom

Currently the previous views are not saved in a stack, so there isn't any way to script a zoom previous command. I've added it to the wishlist.

The way it is set up right now, you use the "Reset" button to step back out to a full view after you have zoomed in somewhere.
