You can also spin the scroll wheel to zoom in and out as well. If you're using a mouse, I think that is actually easier than using the zoom button. The zoom button is particularly useful when you're using a tablet which does not have a scroll wheel on it, or you can also use the zoom button to zoom in by a smaller increment than the scroll wheel by moving your mouse only a tiny bit - sometimes that can be useful.
Then in addition to this, you can also use Alt + left drag for rotate, Alt + shift + left drag for pan, and also shift + right drag for pan as well. These are all for compatability with other programs.

In this case these additional options are more about being compatible with other programs (and people's habits).
