Hi David, having different shapes suddenly collapse down to a point can often make a kind of stressed result.
You can usually get better quality with surfaces when you keep them more regular and relaxed and then cut away some material to get the final shape rather than trying to kind of force the surface to directly follow the final outline.
So in your case that would mean to continue your surface without squeezing the curves together, more like this:
That makes a nice even shaping to the surface. Then to alter the border of the surface you can trim it:
