I copied edges and then used the copied edge to trim the surface. So like this shown with an exaggerated distance:

I didn't create a new rectangle, I used the ones that you had in place already and trimmed them with the copied edge.

That was a simple way because I didn't have to draw anything new, and I didn't need to know the size of the planes, I typed in the distance I wanted to cut off the ends when copying the edge to turn on distance constraint to copy it at a specific distance.

There are a lot of different ways you could do it though.
