The other option, is on real boxes, the lids have gaps cut at the width of the material.

You can see it on unfolded boxes.

So all the flaps need to be trimmed off by the shell width (half for each side), if you want to shell it inwards on itself..

The lower box part has the trimming handled by shell because they are joined edges...
