The other profile was not a problem. I thought that I might have to move it up a tad, but everything is fine.

I think that one of the reasons why the first boolean failed is because the rail curve is not perfectly perpendicular to the edge, meaning it would not have cut it out completely. But in that case, I'd have expected the boolean to work, but leave a bit of chipping near the starting point.
