When you do a second click on a group, it will "drill in" to select children of the group, similar to how a second click on a solid selects edge or face sub-objects of the solid.

With a solid if you use Ctrl+click on a selected solid, it will deselect it without doing any drill-in. I should be able to make the same behavior with groups, but that's not working at the moment.

For now you can deselect it though by doing ctrl+click on your one selected sub-object, or if you continue to drill in when you can't drill in anymore the last click will deselect (without ctrl).
